Livestock Judging 2013

The LaPlata County Livestock Judging team is getting ready to begin its fundraising for 2013.  As many of you know, we do our fundraising before we start judging so we can concentrate on each task individually.  Each year we spend between $8-$9,000 training and traveling to contests in Texas and Colorado.  Through special donors and our fundraising, we're able to pay for all of the hotels and entry fees for everyone.  The county allows us to use the 4-H van to travel so that helps with expenses.

Our primary fundraisers are selling homemade apple pies at Apple Days (October 14th from 11-4 pm) and then a citrus/apples/pie/cider sale that begins in November with delivery in early December.  So, next week on October 10th and 11th we'll be making pies in the commercial kitchen at the fairgrounds.  I have the kitchen reserved from 12 until 9 each day since we have some help from Master Gardener volunteers in the afternoons.  I'll be making pie dough on Wednesday beginning at 3 pm.  We'll be making 360 small 5" tarts,,  30 baked 10" pies and 100 frozen 10" pies.  We usually sell all of the tarts and 30 baked and 30 frozen apple pies at Apple Days.  The additional 70 pies are for you to sell during the Nov/Dec sales.

There is something for everyone to do.  Other than the actual pie construction, we need help peeling apples, vacuum sealing pies, baking pies, labeling pies, putting tarts in plastic containers, transporting pies to James Ranch refrigerator.  On Sunday, the 14th Apple Days is from 11 am until 4 pm in Buckley Park.  I'll be there at 10 am to set up tent and I'll need help transporting coolers of pies from James Ranch.  We'll have three shifts:

10:30- 12:30
12:30 - 2:30
2:30 - 4:30

I'd like to have three people during each shift.  It is easy to sell these pies so don't worry if you don't like selling things.  If it is cold, we'll add coffee and hot chocolate to our booth.  Sign up soon!!

For those of you that are new, this is a great time to get to know everybody.  Please forward this one to anyone who is interested in judging next year.  Call Beth at 759-1387 if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Beth and Brad

Catch-It Meeting - Open to all 4-H'ers

Greetings La Plata County 4-H Community –

On January 25th at 7:00pm at the La Plata County Fairgrounds in the La Plata and Lightner rooms (upstairs in Exhibit Hall) there will be a Catch-it Meeting.  This Catch-it meeting is required for participants of the program, however we wanted to open up this meeting to all 4-H’ers.  We are doing this because this meeting will be a great educational opportunity for all 4-H’ers that have livestock projects or are interested in doing a livestock project in the future.  The class will talk about livestock reproduction and other important animal husbandry issues.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at the Extension Office (970.382.6460)

Most likely, we'll have a Saturday practice on the following Saturdays for example Jan 14th would be a Sat practice.  Weather and livestock availability permitting.

Ag Expo Contest:  We've made arrangements to host the livestock judging contest on Friday, March 16th at Ag Expo. I've attached the contest information and entry forms.   Kali will begin contacting sponsor to help with awards.  If you know of any businesses that might be willing to help sponsor our awards, let her know.  Parents:  We will be preparing lunch again this year and will need everyone's help.

Texas trip for Seniors:  The West Texas A&M and Clarendon College contests are scheduled for March 23-24th (earlier than previous years) so please put these dates on your calendar.  In years past, we leave Thursday, March 22nd and return Sunday, March 25th.

Leadership Development Conference (LDC)

Leadership Development Conference (LDC)
Denver, CO  - January 28 - 30th

Attention 4-H Leaders and Senior Members.

Leadership Development Conference is a State 4-H Event for Senior members and Leaders.  The Conference takes place in Denver, CO at the end of this month.  This is a great opportunity for Senior members to attend a State 4-H event.  At the conference, you will have the opportunity to participate in ice-breaker activities, think-tank meetings, district meetings (San Juan Basin), hear motivational speakers talk about how to develop your leadership skills, be active in a community service event, and attend a banquet and dance.  In addition, you will get to meet other 4-H'ers from around the State and share ideas and stories of your 4-H experience.  Furthermore, on Monday January 30th you will be able to go to our State Capitol and go on a tour and meet your local State legislators.

Leader's can also go to LDC and they have many beneficial trainings to take part in focused towards the Agent and Leader.

Cost for the conference for LPC 4-H members will $100 dollars and will cover your transportation, lodging, registration and some meals (you will have to bring extra money for about 4 meals).  We will also be providing partial scholarships to those that need assistance.

Because we live far from Denver, we will be leaving very early (4:00am) on December 28th and returning late on the 30th.  Space is limited for this Conference, so please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to attend.  We will be charged an extra $20 dollars for registration after January 13th.

For more information check out this site and please call the extension office so we can register you online.

Happy New Year,
